Do Not Be Anxious

Philippians 4:4-7. Questions for a midweek discussion, drawn from the sermon, approved before publishing.

verse 4

  1. Where have you tied your joy to something that can be taken from you?

verse 5

  1. Who has felt the sharp edge of your anxiety lately, and what would gentleness look like there?
  2. How would this hour feel different if you truly believed the Lord was near right now?

verse 6

  1. What is the anxiety that keeps circling in you, the one that has nowhere to land?
  2. What is the one specific request you can actually name and hand to God today?

verse 7

  1. Are you waiting to understand before you can be at peace, when the peace on offer comes before the answers?
  2. What would it mean to let God's peace stand guard over your heart tonight, rather than standing guard yourself?

For personal reflection at home

I am anxious

You are not told to care less, only to move the weight. Take the exact thing that is circling in you, name it, and hand it to God with thanks that he can hold it. Anxiety is care with nowhere to go, so give it somewhere to go this week.

I cannot make sense of things

The peace on offer does not wait for the situation to make sense. It comes before the answers, precisely where things do not add up. Stop trying to think your way to calm, and receive a peace that is given rather than figured out.

I am short with people

Fear makes us brittle and sharp with the people closest to us. The remedy is not gritted teeth but a remembered nearness: the Lord is near. Let that soften your edges this week, and let the people around you meet the gentle version of you.

I am at peace

If you have found a settled place, do not treat it as luck. Anchor it. Name the Lord as its source, and let the joy become worship rather than a mood. Peace that is thanked for tends to stay longer than peace that is merely enjoyed.
