The Prodigal Son

Luke 15:11-32. Questions for a midweek discussion, drawn from the sermon, approved before publishing.

the leaving

  1. Is there a place where you have quietly said to God, give me what is mine and leave me alone?

the turning

  1. Are you trying to come back to God as a servant to be useful, rather than a child to be loved?

the running father

  1. What would change if you truly believed God was running toward you, not waiting to scold you?
  2. Where do you still live like a servant when God has already dressed you as a son or daughter?

the other lost son

  1. Are you the younger son who ran, or the elder son who stayed and grew bitter? The father comes out for both.

For personal reflection at home

I feel unworthy

You may have a speech rehearsed about how far you have fallen. The father does not let the son finish it. He is already running. Come home this week without waiting until you feel worthy, because you never quite will, and that was never the condition.

I have done everything right and I am bitter

The elder brother did everything and still stood outside, angry. If your obedience has curdled into keeping score, the father comes out for you too. Everything he has is already yours. You do not have to earn what you already possess.

I have drifted far

Coming to your senses is not the same as fixing yourself. It is simply turning around and starting home. You do not need the whole plan, only the first step in the right direction. The father will cover the rest of the distance at a run.

I have been welcomed home

If you know the weight of being received when you expected rejection, let it settle in. You were dressed as an heir, not a servant. Let today be a celebration, and let the memory of the welcome carry you when you are tempted to earn it all over again.
